The answer is, a whooping YES.
First off, Darkorbit is a 3D MMO Space shooter, viewed in a 2.5D perspective
You control a spaceship, and travel different maps to kill aliens (PVE) or enemy faction players (PVP), with all other elements and features necessary for an MMO.
The issue according to a lot of players: 'Becoming Pay-To-Win'
It is only natural and has been part of the game since the beginning, because games like these have micro-transactions to keep the game alive and the servers running. There are people who also just like to get real strong and well have fun, so when they spend a lot, then there comes a time they come across Free-players, more or less its like a bullying situation. Since the game was structured in a way, that while you farm for aliens, you're always open for any attacks, either from company or from rival factions.
Those big spenders always get you. Nonetheless you can still enjoy the game as a Free player like me who just likes PVE ( Player vs Enemy )
So entirely my answer would be: Just stick with PVE. Because the game doesn't really give that much in killing players unlike the Aliens you kill they reap you loads of rewards, think of the enemy PLAYERS as an added difficulty when hunting. I guarantee you won't get annoyed, unless they pop your ship like 1000 times every single time you farm.
NOTE: Ive been playing for 6 years or so I've only killed 37 players, because mostly its PVE, its just that PVP is there to wreck you.

FIRST DO NOT FORGET, THERE IS A CHAT BUTTON. TO CHAT PLAYERS..
There are ships available for in-game credits, entirely no need to spend on the game,theres also an auction where you can get Premium items for in-game credits. Equipments like lasers and shields.. and other ammunitions etc are ALL OBTAINABLE with in-game credits and auction.
Here's a breakdown of the starter gears you need exclusively Credit only.
TIP: I suggest getting and asking a clan for funds, nowadays its VERY EASY TO GET CREDITS so theres no issue with giving a newbie some funds to go. or ask someone for help in hunting. NEVER do anything alone, you may ask for help.
For SHIP.
Then for LASERS
For SHIELDS
Thats it. I won't be talking about the other ones like DRONES yet, you can figure those out on your own and ammunition, but these 3 things, you need multiple of the Lasers and Shields in your Nostromo ship just to get you started on a regular basis in game.
Thats enough to get you killing small-fry aliens, and survive some hits from bigger aliens.
The trick is to never go alone, so you gotta group up with players.
I play on the America Server but I'm from the Philippines.
USA 3 ( East Coast ) That's where I play. I might be able to help you since I'm starting a clan only for people who are new and want some funds.

BASICALLY, a good plan would be, ask Credits from a really good clan, use those to purchase these things. Once you've acquired them you can work on anything else on your own.
